Description:

The theme for the 2015 MIS Camp (also known as the junior faculty consortium) is Your Academic Career in Perspective. It will focus on research, teaching, and service activities, including how to achieve balance in these activities and navigate the politics of academia.

The Camp will host approximately 25 campers and 10 senior faculty members and administrators. A major focus of the MIS Camp is to allow junior faculty to interact with respected, experienced senior faculty leaders, and administrators.  In addition to facilitating interaction between junior and senior faculty, the topics and exercises during the MIS Camp will be organized to allow the senior faculty leaders to provide inputs on key lessons learned from their own careers. This input can help shape, focus, and inform discussions of critical issues to young faculty. An important addition to this year’s MIS Camp is participation by senior MIS faculty who have taken leadership roles in their institutions.  This is intended to provide important insights to junior faculty about the “behind the scenes” processes of promotion and tenure, faculty evaluation, and general career development at a variety of institutions.

The program will consist of a series of interactive activities, including an individual exercise for junior faculty to define their career and life goals, their university’s expectations, barriers to success, and unexpected challenges. This will be followed by small group discussions with senior faculty members about how to achieve goals and expectations, break through barriers, and deal with unexpected challenges. There will also be a panel session on promotion and tenure. Other exercises will help compare and contrast expectations regarding research, teaching, and service expectations from the perspective of junior faculty, senior faculty, and administration at different types of institutions; an activity for exploring how junior faculty can balance goals and expectations with their personal life; and, a discussion of how to find mentorship and guidance along the way.

The main goal of the MIS Camp is to offer all participants insights into the academic career that can help them be valuable, marketable, and successful in their career from their own perspective, and that of their university and the academy.  Prospective participants will be required to apply for participation. Criteria for participation in the MIS Camp will include faculty who:

  1. Have a completed Ph.D.;
  2. Are at the beginning of their first, second or third year in an academic position in the Fall of 2015; and,
  3. Have registered for the conference as an AIS member and a regular participant (not a student).

The MIS camp will provide breakfast; a working lunch; and two refreshment breaks. Breakfast, lunch, and refreshment breaks are important to nurture networking. Participants must be officially registered to attend the AMCIS conference.

Fees:
Lunch and all refreshments and snacks for breaks are provided at the Consortium. However, there is a $20 fee to partially cover the cost of lunch.
