3 Full Days on Big Data and Analytics at AMCIS
The unprecedented growth in the importance of Big Data and Analytics has created a situation where the demand for relevant skills is outpacing the ability of educational institutions to keep up. Making the most of Big Data and Analytics requires a comprehensive approach that spans literacy needs across different disciplines and specialized career paths including:
- Business Strategy and Management
- Data Science
- Business Analytics
- Data Strategy and Architecture
- Data Policy
- Informatics for every professional field
- Data Engineering
- Chief Data Officers
- Big Data Development
- Visual Analytics
- C-Suite Roles
Given the broad reach of Big Data and Analytics, the need for skills training encompasses basic understanding that begins in K-12, deepens during baccalaureate and post-graduate education, and continues through ongoing education during ones’ professional career.
In order to explore the challenges related to delivering Big Data and Analytics education, the University of Derby and Birmingham City University are sponsoring the International Big Data and Analytics Educational Conference 2015 (BDA EdCon 2015). A European BDA EdCon 2015 conference is also being held on 30 / 31 July in Istanbul as ECE 2015.
BDA EdCon 2015 continues the success of the previous two BDA EdCon conferences in 2013 and 2014. It has been expanded to include all academics who teach using Analytics software products from all suppliers, including IBM, SAS®, Oracle, Microsoft and others.
Academics are encouraged to attend to network and share good practice in the development of enthusiastic, skilled Data Scientists and Data Analysts.
Sponsored by IBM
We thank IBM for their generous support.
Big data and analytic capabilities continue to increase in importance to organizations worldwide. The explosion of information, or big data, provides greater potential to unlock insights for scientists, businesses and government and more. The major challenges arise from having to: analyze growing amounts of data, leverage the data as a core business asset, and manage the data through its life-cycle while ensuring security and privacy as well as compliance with government regulations.
An additional challenge is the need to develop teams capable of covering all the hard and soft skills necessary for effective application of analytics and data science programmes within business. It is clear that there are too few Unicorns who are capable of all the skills required. Whilst large organisations are able to develop and use teams for this, it is not so obvious how Small and Medium Size Enterprises (SMEs) can acquire, develop and manage the disparate skills required to effectively apply analytics to their activities.
In addition to some vendor perspectives and workshops, there will be five panels discussing the major challenges and opportunities that we face:
Panel 1: Innovative Technical Education Curriculum (including integration across disciplines)
Panel 2: Innovative Management Education Curriculum (including integration across disciplines)
Panel 3: Innovative Research Opportunities and Achievements
Panel 4: Preparing the Pipeline of Resources (short term: e.g., K – 12, careers/jobs; long-term: e.g., certificates, Training)
Panel 5: Transnational Education Approaches, see this link for the background scope for this topic.
Chaired by Richard J Self, University of Derby & Kathy Maitland, Birmingham City University

BDA EdCon 2015 will be held August 12-14 at the El Conquistador Resort in Puerto Rico. The EdCon conference is in conjunction with the AMCIS conference which takes place August 14-15 at the El Conquistador Resort. One registration fee of $895 will cover both conferences. The EdCon program will include the usual workshops, panels, and vendor presentations. A portion of the AMCIS Conference includes a full day of panels and speakers devoted to Big Data as well as an additional day of information systems research presentations.
If you are a member of AIS, which sponsors AMCIS, please use the normal AMCIS registration form on the AMCIS website.
